Trike Riding Tips

Some riders find trikes much easier to handle than traditional motorcycles. However, that doesn’t mean that trikes require no skill to operate. It takes both time and practice to learn how to properly handle a trike. This list of tips from Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson® will walk prospective trike riders through the basics of operating a trike. 

 

Starting and Shifting Gears

When starting a trike, always engage the brake before hitting the clutch. Once you’ve shifted into first gear, release the brakes. Slowly increase the throttle and release the clutch. Gear changes can be rough, so always do them while traveling in a straight line if possible. In practice, changing gears on a trike is a lot like changing gears on a manual transmission car. Drop the throttle, engage the clutch, shift to the appropriate gear, and then let go of the clutch again. 

 

Turning On A Trike

Trikes are steered via the handlebars rather than the rider shifting their weight, as is the case for traditional motorcycles. Slow down before turning, but take the turn itself at a constant speed. Don’t hit the throttle again until your vehicle has exited the corner. Smooth turning is one of the keys to safe trike operation. 

 

Stopping On A Trike

Trikes are heavier than traditional motorcycles, so they require more time to stop. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to stop. If you can only use one set of breaks, be sure to use your trike’s rear brakes.
